VI International Symposium

The Photon Century:
Updating and New Trends in Light Microscopy

Pavia , May 8-11, 2000
Dipartimento di Biologia Animale
University of Pavia

The VI International Symposium The Photon Century: Updating and New Trends in Light Microscopy was held in Pavia (Department of Animal Biology of the University) on May 8-11, 2000, in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme of the European Community and under the auspices of the Società Italiana di Istochimica and the  Società Italiana di Microscopia Elettronica (SIME).
The Symposium was attended by more than 70 partecipants, most of which are PhD and post-Doc students, coming from Universities, Research Institutions and Hospitals in Pavia, Milano, Genova, Trieste.

The topics of the four days were selected within the fastest evolving fields in biomedical and pharmacological research, with special attention to the interdisciplinarity of both the subjects and the experimental approaches. In their presentations, the speakers were asked to consider also the didactic purposes of the Symposium: their presence in the workshop sessions made it possible to continue the discussion with the participants, and to further clarify the impact of modern light microscopy on the advancement of knowledge in biology and medicine. Thus, not only the partecipants, but also the organizers, the tutors, the speakers and the sponsor representatives enjoyed a general overview and an updating on some exciting topics in cell and tissue biology.

As we mentioned in the report of the VII Basic Course on Light Microscopy (May 2-5), the Symposium precisely met the requests of both by the University of Pavia and the European Community for high quality professional updating courses addressed to persons coming not only from Teaching and Research staffs of Universities, but also from other Public institutions and the Industry.

A great contribution to the success of this meeting was given by the well-assorted and enthousiastic team of tutors and technicians who worked in the back-stage, before and during the Symposium, in collaboration with the organizers: their help in the preparation of cultured cell specimens for the workshp sessions and of all the didactic material (including CDs) was definitely fundamental. A special mentioning goes to Vittorio Bertone, the web-master and art-manager of the LdV site in the Department of Animal Biology, who also created the advertising posters of the Symposium, the VII Basic Course on Light Microscopy and Photomicrography Techniques and the satellite Symposium “I colori dell’apoptosi” (and served as the official photoreporter of the meeting too!).

Finally, the organizers wish to acknowledge the contribution of the University of Pavia and the sponsorship of several companies which contributed to the success of the seminars and workshops: besides Carl Zeiss, Oberkochen (which is the industrial partner in the LdV project), it is worth mentioning: (a) Carl Zeiss S.p.A., Milan, which provided modern and fully equipped photomicroscopes and the assistance of microscopy experts; (b) Hamamatsu Photonics Italia SpA, which sponsored the partecipation of an expert in intracellular Ca-measurements (Dr. Mathias Hafner, Mannheim), integrated the microscopical equipment with various systems for video microscopy with high sensitive black-and-white and color CCD cameras and had available experts of this instrumentation; (c) Space Import-Export S.r.l., Milan, representing Molecular Probes (Leiden) and other Companies, which sponsored the partecipation of an expert in fluorescent probes (Dr. Ronald Kempers, Leiden, Holland) and provided probes and antibodies for practical demonstrations; (d) Immagini e Computer, Milan, which made practical demonstrations of several image analysis programs designed to meet different biological applications; and for providing reagents, stainings kits, plastics and sera for cell culture: (e) Bender MedSystems Diagnostics GmbH, Wien; ; CELBIO S.r.l., Milan; DAKO, Italia, S.p.A; DBA, Italia S.r.l.; INALCO S.p.A, Milan; Oncogene Research Products;  Prodotti Gianni S.p.A., Milan; and VECTOR Laboratories.
