LIGHT MICROSCOPY
AND PHOTOMICROGRAPHY TECHNIQUES
VI Basic Course

26-30 April 1999

Investigating cell dynamics
and death by conventional and confocal microscopy
International Symposium

3-6 May 1999

More than 50 partecipants coming from the Universities of Milano, Genova, Padova, Pavia, Sassari attended the Continuing Education Course "Light Microscopy and Photomicrography Techniques" (26-30th April 1999)

The theoretical notions imparted in the morning tutorials by Dr. Gundlach  (Carl Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany) were followed in the afternoon by practical workshops during which the partecipants were allowed to observe and photograph slide preparations, under the supervision of several tutors.

Using the microscopes provided by Carl Zeiss SpA, Italy and Carl Zeiss, Gottingen students have been trained on the different microscopes techniques (bright and dark field, phase and differential interference contrast, fluorescence).
In particular, multicolor labeling experiments were made on living cells and tissue sections using fluorescence probes; in order to obtain the best observation conditions for each dye combination, single or multiband pass filters were used.

High quality micrographs were obtained by the partecipants as shown in the selected pictures gallery

The International Symposium "Investigating Cell Dynamics and Death by Conventional and Confocal Microscopy" (3-7th May 1999) was held at the Department of Animal Biology of the University of Pavia.
More than 70 researchers in the biomedical field coming from the Universities of Pavia, Milano, Genova, Padova, Sassari, Ferrara, Lecce, Braunschweig, Liverpool, Locarno, Neuherberg, Wurzburg attended the Symposium.

In the morning sessions, lectures were given by scientists working on phagocytosis and apoptosis, cytoskeleton, nuclear function, RNA synthesis and processing, and nucleus-to-cytoplasm transport, or studying living cells in situ; examples of microscope preparations concerning the above mentioned topics were examined by the partecipants at the microscopes during the afternoon workshop sessions. The unformal discussion with the speakers made this part of the symposium especially stimulating and fruitful.

During the workshops the partecipants obtained high quality micrographs, some of which are shown in the selected pictures gallery..
